If you’re looking for a creative way to recycle some old clothes and preserve a few of your precious memories at the same time, making a t-shirt quilt is an easy way to do both. This fun project allows you to make personalized quilts from all those old t-shirts you have accumulated over the years.

T-shirt Quilts: Shirts from concerts, schools, or athletic events can all be combined to create a special trip down memory lane in the form of a unique quilt. Add t-shirts with cartoon characters, favorite sayings or those with some special meaning and you’ll surely end up with a future family heirloom.

Follow this simple guide for suggestions and tips on how to make your own special t-shirt quilt, what supplies you may need along with some helpful and useful hints.

First, decide on the size of your quilt which is usually based on the number of t-shirts being used. Sort the shirts by size keeping in mind that even numbers work best. For example, 20 t-shirts could be used to make a quilt with five rows by four rows. Try to find shirts with images that are relatively the same size, 12 inches is a common sized square used.

Next, cut the side seams of the t-shirts from the bottom up to the armpit area, then across the sleeves and through the shoulder seams. It is very important to reinforce the back of your shirt with the interfacing BEFORE cutting out the designs or squares. T-shirts are made of material that’s too stretchy to be cut and sewn without the added support of the interfacing. It’s also wise to use your scrap fabrics as a press cloth to protect the t-shirt’s designs from the hot iron.

Using your ruler, square up the interfaced pieces making sure each one is the same size before cutting. It’s helpful to leave a few inches around the edge of the design if possible, and also to make a cardboard template to ensure even sizing. Now decide on the positioning of your designs and add strips of complementary colors between blocks if desired.

Many times there are images with widely varied color schemes used in t-shirt quilts and the sashing often helps to tie it all in together.

If you’re making a one-sided quilt, then feel free to quilt away, but if your creation has images on both sides you’ll want to use “invisible” thread so as not to distract from the design. Sew each of the squares together forming rows and then sew those rows together with added fabric borders if desired.

Now lay out the backing and the design sides next to each other, wrong side up, add the fleece or batting and then pin together evenly. Trim if needed, and then stitch the edges leaving an opening large enough to turn the quilt right side out before sewing the rest closed.

Clean t-shirts An Iron Light weight, iron-on interfacing Scraps of light-colored fabric Sashing Polyester batting Durable fabric for backing Square ruler Fabric scissors Sewing supplies

Helpful hints:

Plan your design on paper first and double check measurements before doing any cutting.

Use extra sharp scissors to prevent t-shirts and fabrics from fraying. Wash t-shirts in a mild detergent that is free of fabric softener to ensure that the interfacing will adhere properly.

Extra blocks can be creatively used to make personalized purses, pillows, curtains and throw rugs just to name a few.

Thus, depending on the complexity of the design selected to be imprinted on the T-shirt, the graphic designer will create transparent acetate films of each color and will print them in black. Each color is then exposed onto a fine mesh screen that has been coated with photosensitive emulsion –these screens were originally made from silk, thus the term silkscreen– and through the high-intensity lightbox the image is copied onto the T-shirt.

Taken literally, retro means replicating a style of the past. In a world where most look forward, the fashion industry has taken a look back to days gone by to help produce the latest trends. In addition to vintage clothing, retro has become an essential part of the wardrobe; and not just for the trend setters. There is something about a man dressed in a casual manner that seems to add to his sex appeal. Perhaps its because of his relaxed manner or perhaps he’s simply feeling comfortably dressed but this look is one that seems to suit most men. Men can now look well-dressed in a T Shirt simply because of the variety of styles, colors and fabrics now available in t shirts.

If the social gathering is a bit more formal than the backyard BBQ then a Polo neck t-shirt suits this occasion very well. These can be very stylish and when worn with a pair of good slacks or trousers (whichever you call them) and a belt, and a nice pair of shoes the outfit looks smart, respectful, relaxed and charming.

Of course, if you are going to a backyard Barbie and they are close friends then you can get to wear your most outrageous T shirt. The one your partner usually wishes you had never bought no matter how funny the logo or slogan on the front or back. This is probably one of only two occasions that you may ever be able to wear it and if you have to drive there, you had best hope that the car doesn’t break down or you get into an accident. It’s very hard to claim to be a responsible person when you are wearing a simply outrageous T shirt.

The only other time you may possibly be able to wear a T shirt with a really rude saying or meaning is either when those same good friends come to your house for an outside Barbie or when you go to bed with your partner. That is often the downside to one of those t shirts. I was once given one of them that had pigs doing all sorts of interesting things but I only ever wore it once. The T Shirt finally got worn out by using it to sleep in. But it made excellent cleaning rags.

Some funny t-shirts are all about the message and contain no funny graphics whatsoever. The concept and joke or pun is the key to the humor in these t-shirt designs. These designs may include some minimal design work like fun with fonts, drop shadows, colors and outlines, but verbal message is the most important element in these types of funny tees.

You still have to include planning and market research for your custom t-shirts. It does not matter if it’s a short plan or a lengthy plan. Having a plan is better that not having one at all. You need to know which direction you will be taking your business.

Then you would type in family reunion t-shirts and see what the results are. How many other websites do you see that are into this line of custom t-shirts, a few hundred, a few thousand? Find out what kind of internet traffic they’re getting.

After looking at the results, you feel that you have a shot, then you’ll have to find some way to make your custom t-shirt business unique. The key word here is unique. If you don’t try to do something on a different style than your competitors, you’ll probably lose out and lose your business too.

You will also determine how much inventory you will start off with. You don’t need to have an overload that will just sit in your bedroom somewhere. Start off with a certain amount, see how sales go and take it from there. If you’re having brisk sales, then you can probably add an extra batch to your order of t-shirts.

One important thing to remember: just because your sales are good, does not give you the license to spend everything. Some of that money will have to be reinvested in purchasing more t-shirts and other accessories needed for the business. So, you may want to wait a while before you purchase your first real designer bag or coat.

For example, 20 t-shirts could be used to make a quilt with five rows by four rows. Try to find shirts with images that are relatively the same size, 12 inches is a common sized square used.

Next, cut the side seams of the t-shirts from the bottom up to the armpit area, then across the sleeves and through the shoulder seams. It is very important to reinforce the back of your shirt with the interfacing BEFORE cutting out the designs or squares. T-shirts are made of material that’s too stretchy to be cut and sewn without the added support of the interfacing. It’s also wise to use your scrap fabrics as a press cloth to protect the t-shirt’s designs from the hot iron.

Using your ruler, square up the interfaced pieces making sure each one is the same size before cutting. It’s helpful to leave a few inches around the edge of the design if possible, and also to make a cardboard template to ensure even sizing. Now decide on the positioning of your designs and add strips of complementary colors between blocks if desired.

Many times there are images with widely varied color schemes used in t-shirt quilts and the sashing often helps to tie it all in together.

If you’re making a one-sided quilt, then feel free to quilt away, but if your creation has images on both sides you’ll want to use “invisible” thread so as not to distract from the design. Sew each of the squares together forming rows and then sew those rows together with added fabric borders if desired.

Now lay out the backing and the design sides next to each other, wrong side up, add the fleece or batting and then pin together evenly. Trim if needed, and then stitch the edges leaving an opening large enough to turn the quilt right side out before sewing the rest closed.
